Heartstream statement about competitive claims of identical performance

Heartstream is aware of recent claims from some manufacturers and resellers in the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) market that suggest the devices they manufacture or resell contain the same lifesaving technology as our Philips HeartStart defibrillators, implying their devices will perform identically.
A defibrillator is a critical, lifesaving device, and its performance is the result of an entire device system working together cohesively: waveform, hardware, software, shock decision logic, user interface, and optimal size for usability – not a single component, waveform, specification, or algorithm. Peer-reviewed, published clinical data indicates that AED systems on the market today can differ significantly in performance when used across varying patient types, use environments, and user skill levels.
Heartstream does not OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) our cohesive systems to our competitors, and we are not aware of evidence demonstrating that competitor devices perform identically to Philips AEDs across varying patient types, use environments, and user skill levels. Our current generation of defibrillation technology includes patented technology and trade secrets, honed over decades to support effective defibrillation performance, that are not available to other AED manufacturers.
With lifesaving technology, performance is ultimately measured in real-world patient outcomes. Philips HeartStart products incorporate multiple patented technologies and trade secrets, proven safe and effective in clinical studies and over 30 years of patient-use in the real world, not just simulated laboratory testing.
If a manufacturer or reseller suggests their AED performs the same as a Philips HeartStart AED, those claims should be substantiated and support the company’s published materials on their website and device documentation.
